Create Yourself: Inspiration from Maya Angelou

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
― Maya Angelou

Novelist, poet, singer, dramatist, producer, actress and filmmaker; civil rights activist, educator and mother, Maya Angelou exemplifies the quintessential notion of creating oneself.  She has shown us what it means to imagine one's life in every way possible, all the while contributing a startling amount of insight, beauty, and strength to our collective consciousness.

Dr. Maya Angelou has always struck me as an almost mythical creature; a phoenix rising out of the ashes, never to be held down by anyone or anything.  (Not surprisingly, one of her most well-known poems is entitled, "Still I Rise.") She is uncommonly brave, nimble in talent and intellect, fierce in her passion for the arts and humanity and unnervingly eloquent.

If you've ever felt like the odds are stacked against you, take a glimpse into Dr. Angelou's journey and you'll quickly realize that unfair circumstances don't necessitate failure. I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings still haunts me with it's tender poignancy and fierce tenacity of spirit, although I read the book almost 30 years ago.

As I tried to select Maya Angelou's most inspirational quotes, I quickly understood the futility of my efforts. I therefore decided to post an Angelou quote every day this week.  While five quotes scarcely illustrate the breadth of her insights into the human spirit, I hope they at least offer you a little boost every day, as well as a glimpse of what it means to live authentically.

Here's to a great week!
